AWS Rubrik

Challenge:

Twin City Fan & Blower is an industry-leading HVAC fan designer and manufacturer that had a legacy data protection solution for on-premises workloads. However, the solution was complex, quickly becoming outdated and cost-prohibitive due to expensive maintenance renewals. Twin City contacted SHI for a next-generation data protection solution. The solution needed to back up physical and virtual machines in the data center, while archiving to an off-premises backup target. Twin City wanted to back up data to AWS S3 while having visibility into data retrieval directly from the backup management console.

Solution:

SHI’s AWS architects positioned Rubrik for Twin City’s cloud data management needs. Rubrik also provided a scale-out NAS backup target on-premises while allowing backups to be kept locally for 30 days. The SHI cloud team selected Rubrik for its ability to provide native integration with all tiers of AWS Storage (S3, S3-IA, and Glacier), allowing Twin City to manage data tiers directly from the management console. In the end, SHI helped the customer:

  • On-board to the Essentials Management Tier
  • Set up a new account within AWS
  • Configure the Rubrik appliance by establishing connection to AWS S3 as an off-premises target
  • Create policies with Rubrik to migrate data from their appliance to the S3, which helped free up space to begin normal backup policies

Benefits:

Leveraging AWS & Rubrik offered Twin City a flexible backup solution not restricted by legacy technology. The AWS backend model provided virtually infinite capacity where they are only charged for the capacity utilized, and layered storage tiers (S3 and Glacier) allowed for even more cost reduction. And as data ages, moving it to lower tiers reduces the cost of holding archive data by 70%. The solution was so well received that they reduced on-premises storage from 30 to 21 Days!
