Challenge:
Autonomous trucking startup Bot Auto is redefining what’s possible in freight logistics. While many competitors in the space position themselves as technology companies building software to license or sell, Bot Auto is a physical AI company that brings LLM-era AI to power autonomous trucks. Its mission is to move goods safely, efficiently, and profitably using autonomous 18-wheelers powered by cutting-edge AI.
To make that vision real, Bot Auto needed to train and deploy massive AI models capable of processing vast streams of sensor data in real time. Each truck is equipped with 18 HD cameras, eight lidar sensors, and three radar systems, capturing everything from depth and distance to speed and object recognition. The volume of data required to simulate and safely navigate highways made it clear that cloud-based infrastructure alone wouldn’t work. Bot Auto's foundation models learn directly from this unlabeled sensor data, eliminating the multi-million-dollar annotation costs that constrain competitors. This breakthrough, enabled by the same AI advances that powered ChatGPT, demands massive parallel computing power but removes one of the industry's biggest bottlenecks.
The public cloud was too expensive for their scale and too slow for their pace. GPU capacity was limited and wait times could stretch for weeks—an unacceptable delay for a small, fast-moving team. Bot Auto needed advanced computing power with minimal latency, and they needed it immediately.
Solution:
Bot Auto turned to SHI for help in designing and deploying a next-generation AI infrastructure that could keep up with their ambitions. Working hand-in-hand with NVIDIA, SHI helped Bot Auto secure NVIDIA DGX™ B200 servers—the most advanced GPUs on the market and, in fact, the first of their kind ever delivered for commercial use.
This partnership gave Bot Auto early access to top-tier AI performance, enabling their next-generation computing-intensive, self-supervised learning approach and allowing them to train and refine models at unprecedented speed. SHI designed a hybrid architecture that combined high-performance on-premises servers with cloud resources for less time-sensitive workloads, giving Bot Auto the flexibility and cost control they needed.
With a lean IT staff of just a handful of engineers, Bot Auto also benefited from SHI’s ability to simplify vendor management. Instead of coordinating multiple hardware, software, and data center providers, the company relied on SHI as a single trusted partner to handle integration, procurement, and delivery.
Outcome:
In only two years, Bot Auto has achieved a level of operational maturity rarely seen in the autonomous trucking industry: safely operating truly driverless 18-wheelers at highway speeds on public roads with no humans in the vehicle. This milestone, combining full autonomy with real-world operational independence, represents a capability that has eluded most players in the space despite nearly a decade of development.
The key to this rapid progression lies in Bot Auto's AI-first approach: rather than relying on expensive, time-consuming manual data labeling, which became the bottleneck in traditional autonomous vehicle development, Bot Auto built advanced foundation models that can learn directly from raw sensor data. This computing-intensive strategy demands massive parallel processing power but eliminates the annotation costs and delays that have slowed competitors. With the right infrastructure in place, Bot Auto's systems continuously improve from every mile driven, achieving breakthroughs in months rather than years.
The powerful AI infrastructure built and supported by SHI enables Bot Auto's models to process terabytes of sensor data from every drive to refine decision-making and expand into new routes and operational domains. The result is faster innovation, stronger reliability, and the flexibility to grow at startup speed in one of the most competitive technology sectors in the world.
“The company relied on SHI as a single trusted partner to handle integration, procurement, and delivery.”
